Jimbo's Golf Scramble

T.M. Murphy - Posted in Events on October 20, 2016

"My dad fought for our country in the Korean War in all sorts of weather so I think we can at least suck it up and play golf in the rain", I laughed while addressing several of the golfers who attended Jimbo’s Golf Scramble on September 27th at Paul Harney Golf Course.

It didn’t take much convincing. A solid group of family and loyal friends had signed up to play some golf but more importantly to share memories and laughs about James F. Murphy, Jr.

Jimbo (as we liked to call him) used to tell his six kids that back in the war when he was huddled in a fox hole with shells exploding around him that he made a decision. If he survived he would come back home and become a teacher.

“Why a teacher?” We’d ask.

“Because a teacher doesn’t only help their own dreams come true. They help their student’s dreams come true. What’s more rewarding than that?”

Jim Murphy did exactly that. He taught for over 52 years and lived his life to inspire students of all ages to find their dreams and reach their full potential.

Two scholarships have been founded in his name. The first one is for a Falmouth High School student who wants to further his/her education at Cape Cod Community College and the second one is at the Woods College of Advancing Studies at Boston College for a student who is making that courageous step of attending college after being in the workplace.

I’m happy to announce in our first year we raised over $5,000 that will be split between the two scholarships. We will keep a little in the kitty for the planning of next year’s event. Yes, we want this to be a yearly event so another part of Jimbo’s legacy will live on.
